Consider Your Options

Choosing An Established

U.S. Based Sorority

Considerations:

• Typically high dues and additional required fees
• Strict national policies with limited flexibility
• National decisions override local chapter needs
• Very large memberships limit opportunities for individualized mentorship
• U.S.-centric identity that may not reflect Canadian values or campus culture
• Limited ability for members to help shape the direction or identity of the chapter

Starting Your Own

Independent Sorority

Considerations:

• No existing legacy, identity, or reputation
• No alumnae network or mentorship at the beginning
• Requires significant time to build stability
• Must develop all traditions, values, and structure from scratch
• Administrative workload can be overwhelming
• High risk of dissolving before gaining long-term footing
• Limited support when challenges arise

Frequently Asked Questions

Ready to build sisterhood on your campus? Our FAQs answer the most common questions about launching a DAT chapter and leading your founding team.

Starting a chapter begins by reaching out to our national team by completing a Chapter Request Form. We’ll guide you through each step, including campus approval, member recruitment, and establishing your founding executive. You’re not expected to know everything—we support you from the very beginning.

Most campuses require a small group of interested students—usually around 6 to 10—to start. If you don’t have a full group yet, that’s okay. We’ll help you with interest-building and recruitment.

Every school is different, but in most cases, yes. We’ll help you understand your campus’s recognition process and support you in submitting any required documents.

There is no large start-up fee. We keep costs low so that founding a chapter is realistic and accessible. Your main expenses will be standard membership dues and small event costs, which your chapter can budget for together. Please reach out to our headquarters for more information.

DAT is committed to affordability. Membership fees are among the lowest in North America and cover national support, chapter development, and sisterhood events.

Founding members receive ongoing support from our national team, including mentorship, resources, templates, and guidance at every stage. You’re never doing this alone. This also includes website domain forwarding and a chapter e-mail address.

Founders help establish the chapter’s structure, recruit new members, plan events, and uphold DAT values. It’s a leadership opportunity—flexible, supported, and deeply rewarding.
